American Flag on top of Confederate Flag

The Irony of Supporting Both the Confederate and American Flags

I wonder if anti-Black Live Matters/pro-Confederate Flag folks realize the irony of claiming to support both the U.S. flag and the Confederate one. Do they not realize what the Confederate Flag really stood for?

Yes, slavery was part of it, but on a basic level, the Confederate States succeeded from the Union. They denounced the American flag and chose to create their own country and flag.

So right there is a big contradiction. Which makes me wonder, do they actually understand the history of how the Confederate flag they want to fly came to be?

I’m thinking that’s a big no.

Most of these folks identify as Republicans, but do they even know the history of the Republican party? Which was actually a newly established party in the years leading up to the Civil War. It was founded by what modern-day Republicans would likely call “snowflakes” these days. They more resemble modern-day Democrats. Most were anti-abolitionists and believed in a government that would pay for publicly used things like roads and such.

Do they realize Abraham Lincoln, who most Republicans revile, was a Republican?

Secessionists wanted states to take care of themselves –which, another irony, is among the reasons they lost the war. Shit costs money. You know, for things you need to fight wars, like guns, men to fight, food to feed those men, etc.

There are actually benefits to a federal government and centralized funding, something else modern-day Republicans are against. Yet, when their house is on fire, who do they call and expect to come put it out and save their loved ones? I think it’s funny that their economics –which they’d like to see the federal government move more towards now– is partially why the South lost the war.

And, of course, they wanted the right to own other people.

But mostly they didn’t want to belong to the United States of America. So how can you support both flags? It makes absolutely no sense.

Not to mention, at the end of the day it represents a bunch of losers.

Another way to put it: you don’t see the Nazi flag being flown outside of government buildings in Germany. You don’t see commemorative monuments to Hitler or any of his commanders.

Why?

Because they were bad. And they were losers. And it’s offensive.

So if you want to support the Confederate flag, fine. But don’t fly it near the American flag too. They don’t belong together.
