Probably like you, I’m still trying to absorb what happened at our nation’s Capitol Building on January 6.
I’m not surprised by any of it though. That’s what happens when you elect a terrorist President of the United States of America and let him “govern” unchecked. And make no mistake, Trump is a terrorist. A treasonous one at that.
The definition of treason is “the crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government.”
Check.
In the United States of America, terrorism is defined in Title 22 Chapter 38 U.S. Code § 2656f as “premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents.”
Check.
Trump committed treason by leading his supporters in an act of terrorism against our country under the guise of “patriotism” in the biggest fallacy of any of his unproven, outrageous claims yet: a fraudulent election that stole his re-election from him.
I’ve never understood how my Republican friends could support him. I understood it a little bit in the 2016 election. I wasn’t nuts about Hillary myself, but she was the lesser of two evils from my perspective. She wasn’t from their perspective. To each their own.
However, after his four years in office, there’s no excuse. Unless, of course, you follow the fake right-wing news media that espouses lie after lie and doesn’t hold Trump responsible for his inaccuracies.
I was relieved that ahead of the 2020 election some of my Republican friends admitted they couldn’t support Trump and wouldn’t vote for him again. They weren’t sure if they’d vote for Biden either, but their consciences wouldn’t let them vote for Trump. They’d finally seen the light and knew he wasn’t representing the Republican party they loved.
On January 6 Trump’s true colors were finally, irrefutably revealed for the whole world to see. What they saw is that he’s not red like the Republican party. He’s red like the Devil.
And he’s definitely no patriot.
He doesn’t have, nor has he ever had, the country’s best interest as a whole in mind. There is only one thing he cares about and that’s himself.
For pretty much his whole time in office, the majority of Republicans have gone along with him. Why? I don’t know. Some have been afraid to speak out against him, others knew their party was in control so as long as they got what they wanted, they could tolerate him, his misinformation, and his lies.
They shouldn’t have stuck to party lines when he was impeached. Shame on them for not ousting him then. Or not checking him at any of the many other times they could have. Their silence abetted the violence.
They especially helped stoke the fires of his false claims that the election was rigged. They should’ve spoken out sooner and a lot more strongly about that instead of allowing our democracy to suffer such insults.
Clearly, they’re out of touch with just how dangerous social media is and how rampant the fake news is.
Fake news, by the way, that comes from where? Oh yeah. Trump himself. It exists all right…thanks to the alt-right.
But he’s a master of deception and spin and knows how to project to protect. Meaning, he called the kettle black first. He knows that by accusing the other side of the very crimes he’s actually guilty of, he can control the tempo.
Which he’s done for the last four years. During that time, he’s recruited a lot of disillusioned folks into his ranks. Tens of millions of them.
Actually, Bill Clinton summed it best:
“The assault was fueled by more than four years of poison politics spreading deliberate misinformation, sowing distrust in our system, and pitting Americans against one another…. The match was lit by Donald Trump and his most ardent enablers, including many in Congress, to overturn the results of an election he lost. The election was free, the count was fair, the result was final. We must complete the peaceful transfer of power our Constitution mandates.”
As long as his followers supported him, he not only gave them permission to wave their flags of hate and racism but condoned their deplorable actions too.
And make no mistake, they may embrace that nickname, but they are deplorable and in no way, shape, or form patriots. Their actions on January 6 were the clearest demonstration of that yet.
All those, elected politicians and civilians alike, who allowed Trump to build up to the crescendo at his bogus Stop the Steal rally on January 6 are just as culpable for what happened at the Capitol as he is.
Yet, at every scandal, Republicans made excuses for him. Except for a very few, who actually had the guts to speak out against him, such as Mitt Romney or Susan Collins.
But the rest? Especially those congressmen and senators who were going to oppose Biden’s certification as the next President of the United States, are just as guilty as Trump. Far fewer than originally planned actually went through with it, but those who did should be ashamed to the point they resign. Just like so many senior Trump administration officials have done.
They get it. Their names will now forever be tied in history to one of the greatest travesties our nation has ever seen. Also, by resigning, they don’t officially have to cast any votes of impeachment against him. Always have to consider the politics of their actions.
But it’s too late. The truth is out. They supported a sham of a man who found his way into the most powerful position on the planet. A position he wielded for evil to incite violence, terror, and an insurrection. NO resignation can’t change that now.
He did that under the guise of being a patriot, which he absolutely is not.
He committed the highest of all crimes. Treason.
It’s not the first time he’s done it either. He’s allowed Russia to hack us, not just during the 2016 election (which he encouraged) but the big ongoing hack of our government agencies. He’s pressured election officials to change votes.
His last-ditch effort was his grand Stop the Steal finale. Again, he misled his supporters to believe he was with them. That he was at the front of the line leading the march into the Capitol.
Nope, you bunch of dopes. He duped you again. He was back at the White House laughing his ass off.
Where is the patriotism in any of that? Either what Trump did or those who stormed the Capitol?
That’s right. It’s not there. Terrorists.
And, yet, Trump still has a job. Not for long. Thankfully he was voted out. Legally. But still…hell no, he needs to go.
The irony is, those folks who stormed our nation’s capital, tore it up, and desecrated the American flag, are the same folks who are offended by the Black Lives Matter movement and the “thugs” they said participated in those protests. They were outraged by the riots that erupted at some of those events, but they also helped instigate some of the violence thanks to their counter protests.
They’re appalled by those who kneel during the national anthem, calling them unpatriotic. Which had nothing to do with patriotism. That was another spin campaign.
They may think they’re patriots, but they’re wrong. Twice, at least now, they’ve invaded government buildings with weapons. Once in Michigan in May 2020, and again on January 6 in D.C.
Them. They love to say their 2nd Amendment rights need to be protected for just this very reason, yet they’re the terrorists and insurgents.
And how would they like it if someone went into their house like that? What would happen then? Nuh uh. They would’ve shot them. They got better than what they would’ve given.
The point is, Trump is not fit to lead our country. He never was. The 25th Amendment must be invoked. Immediately. If not for this, then for what?
But there’s a reason why Pence won’t invoke it and it only partially has to do with party loyalty. But that’s a subject for a separate post.
