taking guns away in America

Instead of taking guns away, why not put them to work instead?

One of the biggest concerns most gun rights advocates have is that they’re afraid of the government taking their guns away. This is clearly never going to come to pass in America. And just as clearly, mass shootings are going to continue.

Which is insane. Because at the same time, the majority of the gun-loving gun-toters also oppose abortion in the name of wanting to save children’s lives. If they were really concerned about that, they’d be for bans on assault-style weapons, which no citizen in any country should need to have.

Of course, with how bad gun violence is in America, it’s become a self-fulfilling prophecy where you could legitimately argue you need one to feel safe —or at least have a fighting chance to defend yourself against someone else who’s toting one.

But of course that’s not the real answer. The shameful thing is we’re now at a point where some kids are experiencing their second mass shooting, which was the case with the Michigan State University shooting. There were kids there who had survived the Sandy Hook Elementary and Oxford High School shootings. Only to find themselves living through another one.

Which is not only mind-boggling if you really think about it, but also disgusting. And unacceptable. Why isn’t anything being done to actually stop these things?

Well, clearly it has to do with money and the NRA. People claim it’s all about rights, but it all boils down to companies being worried about it impinging on their Benjamins.

And the hypocrisy of it all is astounding. Kids are allegedly first priority for the right, which is why they’re so keen to protect them from drag queens, and let’s not forgot all those Dems they say are sex trafficking children. All the while ignoring the elephant in the country that’s actually leading to children dying.

No. Not dying. That’s something you do in a car accident or from cancer. Let’s make it very clear what’s actually happening. They’re being aborted by people with guns.

I was lamenting the insanity of it all with a friend when it struck me. Okay, we pretty much know guns are here to stay, and taking steps to improve mental health isn’t going to happen anytime soon either. Which is also a desperately needed component of this equation that needs to be addressed. But something has to change.

And since the fervid gun rights activists are so keen to keep their weapons, let’s put them to work helping to thwart more mass shootings.

Anyone with a gun should have to do mandatory watch duty one day a year at a school. Like jury duty, except school protection duty.

Schools are only in session, what? Nine or ten months of the year? Divvying it up between all the gun owners should result in a surplus of protectors. They might not even have to do it once a year, but every other year.

Seems like a small price to pay to make sure America’s kids stay safe and alive.
